Bachelor of Science Degree
in Music Education

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education is a professional degree for students who are interested in teaching music in k-12 schools. This program is an intense study of music and education that culminates in state certification as a teacher of music. In addition to private study on their principle instrument and participation in ensembles, students complete the music theory, history and literature sequences, and take a variety of music education courses that include study in instrumental, choral and general music for all grade levels. The music education faculty at USF take a progressive approach to teaching in the schools, acknowledging that the musical world outside the schools has changed drastically, and will continue to change in the near future. The Bachelor of Music Degree is a professional degree for students who wish to pursue a career in music. Students interested in a BM degree can choose between concentrations in performance, composition, jazz studies and electronic music. The Bachelor of Music Degree is a professional degree for students who wish to pursue a career in music. Students interested in a BM degree can choose between concentrations in performance, composition, jazz studies and electronic music. These programs require 120 credit hours of study that include private study on their principle instrument and participation in ensembles. Additionally, students complete the music theory, history and literature sequences, and take additional course work in their choosen concentration. Graduates from BM programs at USF find themselves in very competitive positions for graduate study and musical careers. Bachelor of Arts Degree
In Music Studies

The Bachelor of Arts in Music Studies degree is a non-professional degree for students who wish to supplement other interests with music study. This program is ideal as part of a double major with a field outside of music. Requirements include approximately 50 hours in music with emphasis choices in performance, composition, history and theory. Music Minor
Students seeking a minor in music may choose from four concentrations, each with a minimum of 19-23 semester hours required: (1) History-Theory-Literature, (2) Performance, (3) Composition and (4) Electronic Music. Each of the concentrations will include the same core curriculum consisting of 11 hours and course work in the selected concentration. Learn more...

Ph.D. in Music Education

Faculty Coordinator is Dr. Victor Fung
The Ph.D. in music education is the terminal degree in the field. At USF, this program is intended for the aspiring pinnacle leader in music education research, teaching, and administration. The curriculum prepares the student to engage in original research in music education and related fields (arts education, music technology, music psychology, etc.). Admission requirements include an interview with the music education faculty and the submission of writing samples and GRE scores. A limited number of fellowships and scholarships are available to outstanding students. PhD applicants may be qualified for up to $500 to travel to USF Tampa Campus for a campus visit and interview. Master of Arts in Music Education

The Master of Arts in Music Education is intended to empower students as sophisticated consumers of research related to music education practice and theory. This degree is offered as an online degree program and can be completed away from the University. Admission requirements include a bachelors degree in music or music education, two years previous k-12 teaching experience, and letters of reference. The GRE is not required. Learn more...

Students can select from among several concentrations that lead to a Master of Music degree. Most students will devote themselves to one concentration, however, double concentrations are possible.
