On this page you will find a variety of information and links to forms you will find helpful. Email Dr. Williams if you have questions or need additional help. Areas covered below include: Graduate Theory/History Diagnostic Testing; Course Registration; Recital Program Template; Graudate Assistantships; Graduate School Forms; Comprehensive Exam Contract; and Graduate Program Requirements.

GRADUATE THEORY/HISTORY DIAGNOSTIC TESTING: As part of the nine hour common core requirement, all master degree programs require course work in music theory and music history/literature. Before enrolling in any graduate level music theory or history/literature course, students must complete the appropriate diagnostic exams to ensure they are prepared for graduate level work in these areas. The exams are scheduled, each semester, the week before classes begin. The Fall 2008 testing dates and times are:

Diagnostic Exam in Music History: Friday, August 22, 10:00am-12:00pm, FAH 133

Diagnostic Exam in Music Theory: Friday, August 22, 1:00pm-3:00pm, FAH 133

There is no pre-registration for these exams. Just bring pencils and some blank paper (you may also find blank manuscript paper helpful) with you to FAH 133 (music building) at the appropriate time. Students who pass exams will be allowed to register for the appropriate course work. Students who do not pass exams have two options: 1) do continued self study and retake the exams the following semester (without taking theory and/or history/literature course work until the exam(s) is/are passed); 2) take the appropriate review course(s) in the fall (MUS 4930, Graduate Music Theory Review and/or Graduate Music History Review). Successful completion of review courses will allow registration in the appropriate course work starting in the Spring semester. If a student opts for option one and does not pass the diagnostic exams the second time, they must register for the review course(s). Note to students on Graduate Assistantships: at no time will a graduate assistantship cover the cost of these review courses.

Students enrolled in the MA in Music Education program and students who live a distance from USF that makes travel to campus for the Diagnostic Exam impractical can arrange to take these exams at a remote site. Contact Dr. Williams for information to start this process. The required forms for arranging a remote exam are linked HERE.

CLASS REGISTRATIONS: Registration for Spring 2008 classes is now open. Classes begin January 7. There is a late registration fee if you wait to register for classes after classes begin, however, you may add/drop classes until January 11 as long as you registered for anything prior to the start of classes. You can access the OASIS Schedule of Classes HERE. Many graduate music courses require a permit for registration. The permit form is linked from THIS page. Fill it out and email it to Dr. Hayden and he will register you for classes. If you prefer, you can also print it out and fax it to (813) 974-8721. Email Dr. Williams if you are in need of advising for registration.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS: Each year there are a limited number of Graduate Assistantships available for incoming graduate students. There is a separate online application required if you are interested in applying for a Graduate Assistantship. For full consideration, read the information on the GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP APPLICATION carefully, complete the form and submit it as early as possible.
