Graduate Theory/History Diagnostic Testing
As part of the nine hour common core requirement, all master degree programs require course work in music theory and/or music history/literature. Before enrolling in any graduate level music theory or history/literature course, students must complete the appropriate diagnostic exams to ensure they are prepared for graduate level work in these areas. The exams are scheduled, each semester, the week before classes begin. The Spring 2010 testing dates and times are:

Diagnostic Exam in Music Theory:
Monday, January 11, 3:00pm-5:00pm, FAH 136 (SOM offices)

Diagnostic Exam in Music History:
Monday, January 11, noon-2:00pm, Room 136 (SOM offices)

There is no pre-registration for these exams. Just bring pencils and some blank paper (you may also find blank manuscript paper helpful) with you at the appropriate time. Students who pass exams will be allowed to register for the appropriate course work. Students who do not pass exams have two options: 1) do continued self study and retake the exams the following semester (without taking theory and/or history/literature course work until the exam(s) is/are passed); 2) take the appropriate review course(s) in the fall (MUS 4930, Graduate Music Theory Review and/or Graduate Music History Review). Successful completion of review courses will allow registration in the appropriate course work starting in the Spring semester. If a student opts for option one and does not pass the diagnostic exams the second time, they must register for the review course(s). Note to students on Graduate Assistantships: at no time will a graduate assistantship cover the cost of these review courses.

For more information on the Diagnostic Exams see the following links:

Students enrolled in the MA in Music Education program and students who live a distance from USF that makes travel to campus for the Diagnostic Exam impractical can arrange to take these exams at a remote site. Contact Dr. Williams for information to start this process. The required forms for arranging a remote exam are linked HERE.
