Undergraduate Application Procedures

Step 1: University Application

All students must first apply online for admission to the University of South Florida by visiting the USF Office of Admissions. Applying to the School of Music is a separate procedure from University admissions. After fully completing and submitting your university application for admission to USF, applicants will receive a "U Number." This identification number must be entered into the School of Music application in order for it to be accepted. Applicants do not have to wait for a University admission decision to apply to the School of Music, you only need your “U Number”. Note: This identification number is only provided to applicants upon full completion of their university application.

Step 2: Electronic Recommendation Forms

Electronic recommendation forms are required of all undergraduate degree programs. Applicants will be asked to submit a minimum of one, maximum of three, reference email addresses while completing their School of Music online application. Electronic recommendation forms will be emailed directly to your reference(s), so be sure the email address(es) entered are accurate. References, such as a music director or private music instructor, should have first-hand knowledge of your musical/personal background. Recommendation forms will only be accepted via our online electronic submission program. Make sure you have your email addresses ready before starting your School of Music application.

Step 3: School of Music Application

Once applicants have secured their “U Number” and Reference email addresses, they will need to complete their online application for the School of Music. During this application process, you will be asked to register for an audition date. Auditions are required for all undergraduate degree programs: both for incoming freshman and transfer students. Audition dates and deadlines for Fall 2018 admission are as follows:

  • February 3, 2018 - Application Deadline is January 17, 2018 (Scholarship Consideration)
  • February 17, 2018 - Application Deadline is January 17, 2018 (Scholarship Consideration)
  • March 24, 2018 - Application Deadline is March 7, 2018 (Admission ONLY)

The School of Music Admissions Office will contact applicants with their audition day schedule approximately two-weeks before their chosen audition date. Completing a live audition on the dates above is strongly recommended. However, in the event extreme circumstances prevent you from coming to campus, applicants may contact our Admissions Director for alternative options.

All students applying for the bachelor's degree in Music Education will also be assigned an interview with the Music Education faculty.

All students applying for the Bachelor of Music degree in Music Composition will be assigned an interview with the composition faculty and are required to submit a composition portfolio before coming to their on-campus audition.

Step 4: Prepare For Your Audition

To become a music major every prospective undergraduate must complete an audition and be accepted into a performance studio. It is not possible to become a music major if the student does not exhibit sufficient performing competence in his or her audition. Only our February audition dates will be considered for scholarships, based upon the level of performance exhibited during the applicant's audition. All audition dates will be considered for scholarships based on the level of performance exhibited during their audition. Please contact your potential applied professor listed in the link below for questions related to audition materials.

Step 5: Acceptance and Denial Notification

The School of Music will make final admission decisions for February applicants once both audition dates have been completed. Applicants will be notified via email of their acceptance or denial during the week of February 26, 2018.

Applicants who audition for the School of Music in March will be notified of their acceptance or denial during the week of April 2, 2018.

Please be sure your university application is in good standing as missing requirements, such as final SAT or ACT scores, or academic issues can delay notification.
