A Taiwan native, Ya-Hui Cheng received her BA in Music from Queens College, City University of New York, a MA in Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in Music Theory from Florida State University.

Dr. Cheng was the recipient of the National Opera Association Dissertation Competition Biennial prize, and is the author of Puccini’s Women: Structuring the Role of Feminine in Puccini’s Operas (Verlag Dr. Müller, 2009). Her most recent articles appear in The Opera Journal and Journal of Historic Research in Music Education. She has presented her research at various conferences in the UK, US, and Europe and will present her latest work in Hong Kong at the end of 2015.

Dr. Cheng was the granted Summer Scholar for the National Endowment for the Humanities. She served on the program committee for the Music Theory Southeast and is a Music Theory textbook reviewer for Oxford University Press. Similarly, she has been an associate editor and translator for Analytical Approaches to World Music Journal, and the same journal’s Chinese Language Mirror Website, since 2013. Dr. Cheng is now on the program committee for the International Conference on Analytical Approaches to World Music (2016). She is a co-chair for the Analysis of World Music Interest Group and a committee member on diversity—both belonging to the Society for Music Theory. She is also the awarded public scholar for the Kettering Foundation with which Cheng was invited to participate in a two-year Public Scholar program (2013-15) and engaged in seminars on the roles of Higher Education in 21st Century. Her latest research focuses include exoticism in Italian operas and Giacomo Puccini, musical globalization, Popular music in Asia and Buddhist music in the Mahayana tradition.

Prior to joining the music faculty at the University of South Florida, Dr. Cheng was an associate professor with tenure at Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, GA (2009-2015).
