High School Students!
Do you have a passion for composing original music? If so, check out the new Young Composers Program (YCP) at USF. This program will give you the opportunity to compose for a variety of instruments under the guidance of the YCP instructor Susanna Hancock (MM) and USF Composition Professors Paul Reller and Baljinder Sekhon. Hear your original music performed live in state-of-the-art Barness Recital Hall at the USF School of Music.

USF YCP Program

The USF Composition Program seeks to fill the need for advanced high school students in the Tampa Bay area to learn the craft, skills, and trends of composing acoustic music for the concert hall. The USF Young Composers Program provides the opportunity for students to learn the intricacies of composition and instrumentation in a professional setting and equips students with skills they would not otherwise learn in the typical high school music program. This course is ideal for students who are considering pursing composition at the collegiate level, or for students who have a passion for composing regardless of their career plans. The course curriculum includes the study of instrumentation, orchestration, notation, digital engraving (Finale and Sibelius), modern approaches to form and harmony, and current stylistic trends in composition. All class meetings take place in the state-of-the-art composition lab at the USF School of Music and each student will have a personal workstation with a full range of up-to-date software and hardware. This course caters to students of all different skill levels and each semester concludes with a concert featuring student compositions.
