Choral Music Faculty

USF Choral Studies are led by three internationally recognized faculty: 

     Dr. Richard Zielinski, Director of Choral Activities
     Dr. Robert Summer, Graduate Choral Studies
     Dr. Lynne Gackle, Coordinator of Choral Music Education




Dr. Richard Zielinski
Director of Choral Activities

Dr. Richard Zielinski  (Dr. Z) is at home in front of choirs and orchestras conducting both modern day repertoire as well as classical standards.  He serves as the Director of Choral Activities at the University of South Florida (Tampa) where he conducts the USF Chamber Singers and University Singers, and administers all choral activities.  Richard is the Music and Artistic Director of  The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, principal chorus of The Florida Orchestra and Music Director and Founder of the Richard Zielinski Singers; a 40-voice professional chorus.  He has been a guest conductor for The Florida Orchestra for performances of Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation, Bach’s B-Minor Mass, annual holiday concerts, and over a dozen Coffee Concerts, Blue Jeans Classics Concerts, and educational Youth concerts.  Richard is also the editor of a new Polish Music Series with Roger Dean Publishing.

 Internationally, Richard serves as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria, and Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of In Terra Pax (an international choral academy) and the International Festival of Choral Song, both in Miedzyzdroje, Poland.  From 2003-2005, he served as Artistic Director and Conductor of The Szczecin Technical University Choir, one of Poland’s top choral ensembles.  For further information, please visit www.richardzielinski.com.



Dr. Robert Summer
Graduate Choral Studies

Dr. Robert Summer, professor of music, holds degrees from Susquehanna University and Indiana University where he studied with Fiora Contino and Julius Herford. He teaches conducting on the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as Introduction to Music Literature for music majors. Dr. Summer is founder and former director of The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, and has prepared many choruses for conductors including Irwin Hoffman, Jahja Ling, Julius Rudel, Sir David Willcocks, Sir Neville Marriner, and Robert Shaw. Dr. Summer was presented with an "Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award" in 1991 by the University of South Florida, and awarded a "Professor Excellence Award" in 1998. In 1993 he was given the Wayne Hugoboom Distinguished Service Award by the Florida Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association.



Dr. Lynne Gackle
Choral Music Education

Dr. Lynne Gackle,  is Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education and serves as conductor of Bel Canto Women’s Choir at the University of South Florida.  She has earned degrees from Louisiana State University (B. M. Ed) and the University of Miami (FL) (M.M. and Ph.D.).  Previously, Dr. Gackle served on the faculties of the University of Mississippi and the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL.  Prior teaching experience includes the public schools of Louisiana and Florida at both the elementary and secondary levels. She is an active clinician, conductor and adjudicator for choral clinics, honor choirs, all-state choirs, workshops and festivals through the United States, Canada, Australia and Germany. 

Dr. Gackle is the Founder/Artistic Director of the Gulf Coast Youth Choirs, Inc., a community choral arts organization in Tampa.  She has served as the President of the American Choral Directors Association Southern Division as well as ACDA-Florida and received the Wayne Hugoboom Distinguished Service Award from the Florida ACDA Chapter for dedicated service, leadership and excellence in choral music in Florida.  Recently, Lynne served as the National R & S Chair for Children’s Choirs for ACDA and currently is the State R & S Chairperson for Women’s Choirs.  Dr. Gackle is a contributing author to the MENC publication, Music at the Middle Level:  Building Strong Programs, and has had several articles published in the Choral Journal.  Her research regarding the adolescent female voice is unique and is frequently cited in choral texts and in other research on the topic.  Additionally, she is the editor of the Lynne Gackle Choral Series for Colla Voce Music, Inc and of Choral Artistry for the Singer with Walton Music.
